You’ve taken the first step toward fuller, thicker hair with a NeoGraft® hair transplant in Lafayette—we are so excited for you! As your scalp begins to heal and your new follicles settle in, proper aftercare plays a key role in a smooth recovery and protecting your results.
Dr. J. Kevin Duplechain is a cosmetic surgeon with decades of experience and is committed to guiding his patients through every phase of care. In this post, he shares what to expect after your Lafayette NeoGraft procedure and how to care for your scalp in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

Day 1-3: Be Gentle & Let Healing Begin
NeoGraft is known for its minimally invasive, no-stitches approach—but your scalp will still need some time to heal. In the first 72 hours, it’s important to:
- Avoid touching or washing the transplant area. You’ll notice tiny crusts forming around the grafts—this is completely normal.
- Sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling (propping yourself up with 2–3 pillows or using a travel pillow helps).
- Stay out of the sun and avoid sweating (including workouts or saunas).
- Take it easy. Most patients feel fine the next day, but it’s best to rest, avoid alcohol, and follow your hair transplant aftercare instructions closely.
“The best indication of a great doctor is a return patient… not once, but several times for various surgical & non-surgical procedures. Over the course of 20 years, I’ve trusted Dr. Duplechain with huge life decisions. Always having a kind word and the hands-down best bedside manner, his ability to actually listen to what outcome you’re wanting and walking you through the process, the pros/cons, & realistic expectations make you feel so much more confident going into surgery…I am very fortunate to have Dr. Duplechain’s level of expertise and professionalism right here without having to travel out of state.”

Day 4-10: Gentle Cleansing & Visible Healing
Around day 4, you’ll be given the green light to start washing your hair—gently. Please be sure to:
- Use the recommended shampoo and follow the specific washing instructions provided.
- Do not scratch or pick at the grafts (even if they feel itchy or crusty).
- You may begin to notice some shedding of the transplanted hairs. This is normal and part of the hair growth cycle. The follicles are still healthy and will regrow.

Week 2-4: Shedding Phase & Scalp Recovery
Don’t be alarmed if many of the newly transplanted hairs fall out—this “shedding phase” is expected and temporary. The shedded hairs clear the way for stronger, permanent growth from the follicle root.
- Redness and scabbing should be resolved by now.
- You can usually resume light exercise after 2 weeks and more strenuous activity when Dr. Duplechain clears you.
- Continue using approved hair products as recommended for post-transplant hair care.
Month 1-3: New Growth Is on the Horizon
Dr. Duplechain and his staff will perform 2 PRP treatments during this phase of healing. The first platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment will be performed at the one month followup. A similar treatment at 3 months will also be performed. No downtime is expected with either of these treatments.
While your scalp may look similar to how it did pre-procedure, healing is happening below the surface. Patience is key during this stage.
- It’s normal not to see visible growth yet. Most patients notice early signs of new growth starting around month 3.
- Avoid chemical treatments or coloring your hair during this time unless approved by Dr. Duplechain.
Month 4-12: Fuller, Thicker Hair
This is when you’ll start to see real change. Most patients experience steady growth between 4 to 6 months, with full results visible around the 9 to 12-month mark.
- Your new hair will grow in gradually and can be cut, styled, and treated just like the rest of your hair.
- Dr. Duplechain may recommend PRP scalp treatments or medical-grade hair care products to support long-term success after your Lafayette hair transplant.
